Press Release - Telephone Scams 2019

RE: PRESS RELEASE - TELEPHONE SCAMS MORE NUMEROUS IN 2019

According to the Ulster County District Attorney’s Division of Consumer Affairs, unwanted telephone calls to consumers increased 128% from the first half of 2018 to the first half of 2019 (this according to a data analysis compiled by Hiya (https://hiya.com/), a free call-screening app). These mostly robocalls can represent annoying interruptions, or they can be dangerous scams that are designed to steal victims’ money or identities. Hiya has identified a trend it calls “the neighbor scam.” Spoofing technology allows a clever scammer to make his number appear to be local, making it more likely the recipient will answer. The scammer placing the call, usually from outside the country, hopes consumers think they recognize the number as familiar even though it’s not a number saved in their phone.

Common phone scams include the IRS scam, the utility scam, the grandparent scam, the charity scam, the computer cold call repair scam and, of course, the Social Security Administration scam.

Consumer Affairs advises the best defense against these phone scams is a healthy amount of skepticism. Scammers generally try to scare their victims, or they promise them something that’s just too good to be true. Consumers should not hesitate to hang up when they hear a recorded voice, even if it looks like a local call.

Press Release - Niles Turner arrest

Ulster County Family and Child Advocacy Center

                                  PRESS RELEASE

Investigators from the Ulster County Family and Child Advocacy Center report the arrest of Niles H. Turner 33, of 376 West Saugerties Road, Saugerties, NY.

On October 21, 2019 the Ulster County Family and Child Advocacy Center began investigating a complaint to the Office of Children and Family Services central registry.  The investigation revealed that Niles Turner, on a number of occasions, violated a stay away order of protection, which was issued by the Town of Saugerties Justice court, Honorable Christopher Kraft, on 10/23/2019.

On November 8, 2019, Turner was arrested and charged with Criminal Contempt 2nd a misdemeanor.  Turner is set to appear in the Town of Saugerties Court on 11/20/2019.

The Ulster County Family and Child Advocacy Center was assisted by members of the Town of Saugerties Police Department.  

The Ulster County Family and Child Advocacy Center is comprised of members of the Town of Saugerties Police Department, Ellenville Police Department, Ulster County District Attorney’s Office, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and  Ulster County Child Protective Services.
